Laying your own sod

Soil Preparation

  • Begin by clearing the site of any existing grass, stones, and debris. Use a rake to break up the soil, creating a loose, workable bed about 6 to 8 inches deep. This process promotes better root penetration. If necessary, add a layer of high-quality topsoil to provide a smooth, nutrient-rich base for the sod to bond with.

  1. Fertilizer Application

    • To encourage quick rooting and growth, apply a starter fertilizer to the prepared soil. This supplies essential nutrients that are vital for the young grass to thrive.

  2. Sod Installation

    • Start laying your sod along a straight edge to keep rows orderly. Avoid walking on the freshly laid pieces to prevent compaction. Stagger the sod strips in a brick-like pattern, ensuring each piece is snugly fitted against its neighbors without overlapping or leaving gaps, to avoid drying out.

  3. Sealing Gaps and Rolling

    • Fill any small gaps between the sod pieces with cuttings to ensure a seamless lawn surface. If you have access to a lawn roller, use it to enhance the contact between the sod roots and soil, facilitating better root establishment. If not, a thorough watering can also help compact the soil. Install sod the same day it's delivered to prevent it from spoiling.

  4. Watering Regimen

    • Initially, water the sod deeply to encourage deep root growth, and maintain daily watering without causing waterlogging. After the first week, reduce watering to every other day. Gradually decrease the frequency over the next three weeks to help the lawn become more drought-tolerant.

Following these steps carefully will help you achieve a healthy, beautiful lawn that is both durable and attractive.
